Warlock 100% Hit Cap

Note: The numbers still apply for 3.1 changes, but the talent Cataclysm changed.
You have zero DPS when you are dead. Staring at the floor of the dungeon admiring how much detail Blizzard put into the room. You are trying to avoid that one percent wipe. Since you are a fantastic DPSer you know how to stay alive. A Shadow Bolt leaves your fingers, but your screen shows…

Miss

Well that is not good. You have to HIT the boss to DPS the boss.

For warlocks (all casters, I guess that includes mages... but whatever) it is really easy… we have to pay attention to the hit rating on our gear.

Wowwiki.com tells us that no matter what level our chance to hit and miss is the following.

Boss levelChance to HitChance to Miss
+2 (5-man)94%6%
+3 (10/25-man)83%17%

Today, after 3.0, you can reach 100% hit. If you reach the hit cap it is possible for your spells to never miss.

Prior to 3.0 you would hit cap at 99%. Everyone would have a 1% chance to miss with a spell. At level 70 our magic number was 215 hit for Kara. Now we have new numbers to focus on.

Warlocks have two talents a talent to increase your hit percent, Suppression in the Affliction tree and Cataclysm in the Destruction tree. It would take six three points to increase your hit by 3%.

You will also STILL need to stack hit rating to reduce your miss chance further. You will put points into those talents for now. The goal is to move them out of those talents as you build your hit rating gear. (edit: You may keep these points for secondary reasons.)

Each percentage of hit requires 26.23 hit rating at level 80. To hit cap you will need to round up so that you have 100% hit or more.

Chance to MissHit RatingHit Cap Rating
1% 26.2327
2% 52.4653
3% 78.6979
4% 104.92105
5% 131.15132
6% 157.38158
7% 183.61184
8% 209.84210
9% 236.07237
10% 262.30263
11% 288.53289
12% 314.76315
13% 340.99341
14% 367.22368
15% 393.45394
16% 419.68420
17% 445.91446

So what is your hit rating goal at level 80? It depends. *grin*

Goal – 5 mans
We need enough hit to overcome a 6% miss rate. From the above table that is a 158 hit cap rating. If you have the talent points to increase your chance to hit by 3%, you need to overcome a 3% miss rate. You will need 79 hit cap rating.

Goal – 10/25 mans
We need enough hit to overcome a 17% miss rate. From the above table that is a 446 hit cap rating. If you have the talent points to increase your chance to hit by 3%, you need to overcome a 14% miss rate. You will need 368 hit cap rating.

Boss levelChance to MissHit Cap RatingHit Cap Rating (3% talents)
+2 (5-man)6%15879
+3 (10/25-man)17%446368

Keep in mind what your personal situation is when you play. Pick the number that is right for your game time. Anyone who tells you that 446 is the ONLY hit cap rating is W.R.O.N.G. and now you know why.

Also NOT having a 100% hit rate is not bad. We survived all of BC at level 70 being at 99%. Lots and lots of bosses died in that time. Don't sweat about it. If you do, you will start stinking up the place. I have enough trouble with all the undead locks around here. They need to keep their mucus to themselves is all I am saying.

Happy killing!!

  1. With the buff from shadowpriests/moonkins and some Snapper Extreme you would only need 249 hit.

  2. Mr. Anon, thank you for playing. That does not change what your actual Hit Cap will be. Your Hit Cap is EXACTLY the same for hitting a boss. With a buff from a Draenei (Inspiring Presence), another class, food buff, gear, or whatever... does not change your Hit Cap. Those things only give you additional ways to reach that Hit Cap.

If I could guarantee that ever-single-run I did would included a Draenei mage, sure I would plan for that. But the only guarantee is that there is a Nelf dancing on a mail box somewhere.

  3. The Hit cap is 446
However, that's not what you need in a 25 man. Why? because there is no 25 man raid which isnt being run by morons who will not have a moonkin and a draenei. That is 4% hit that you are guaranteed to have. Thus, going to a 25 man with a 446 hard hitcapping, is self nerfing. 13% is enough for the 25 mans.
I always keep a separate 10 man setwith about 375 hit, and I never got a miss.

You are cute. I would give you a cookie. But then I would imagine you would not actually read the warning label that said Rat poisoning inside.

No Moonkin? … There are 10 classes with 3 talent specs. It is quite common to run without a Moonkin. A prepared and reliable raider should be prepared for the case. I only raid with 2 druids who are part time raiders. About 30% of all my raids don’t even have a druid in them. Let alone a Moonkin.

No Draenei? … I think you just called every Horde morons. You should be scared.

4% Guaranteed? … In life you are only guaranteed death.

446 hard hitcapping? … *rereads above* Nope never said to “Hard” Hit Cap gear to 446, that IS the cap you want to reach. I actually suggested for raiding 368 with talents, which is lower then what you are sporting. I personally run with 9% to 11% Hit affliction spec.

Here is a piece of candy.

  5. So... Realistically speaking, what do you suggest? I'm in a guild where having two sets of gear just isn't really possible (I'd be so damn low on DKP...). Carrying around gems to plop into sockets? Better question would be, what do YOU do?

Running with less than the optimal hit rating feels like it would leave you vulnerable to being stuck between a rock and hard place when you can't reach the hit cap for a raid....

Answer... Thats your guilds problem not a problem with your class, if your going to put up an argument make sure with with the same topic. It is not uncommon to see many people with a verity of gear sets. in fast on two of my toons I have three sets each, so thats not a class issue.

    Answer...
You have to miss, it's how the game was built... you post pics of all your dps details from recount in a 25 man raid and lets see that never miss.

"Thus, going to a 25 man with a 446 hard hitcapping, is self nerfing."

Answer... now what happens when you don't get the buff? even if they are there they are just as bad as trying to get a pally buff. they always forget and I don't think you have the perfect mind to always remind them, so once that does run out now your missing shots that you could have landed with the correct hit cap.

    Lesson:::
If you find a post that you don't like press the pack page instead of trying to find flaws in another persons work.

    @ Anonymous....

Yah because the hit talent (which is from BOOMKINS and SPRIESTS ONLY, baddies) is totally something that you have to "buff" right....

    Ummm..NO.

It's part of their normal rotation...GOD some people really do NOT need to comment if you have NO CLUE what you are saying.

Its quite simple. IF you have a boomkin/Spriest in your raid, have your hit talents, AND have a draenei...then you need your tooltip to say 10%. If no draenei...then you need it to say 11%. If no draenei OR boomkin/spriest then (<----for 1 youre raid is fail) you need your tooltip to say 14%. If you dont have ANY of the above....then just quit wow.

    Pretty simple.

  8. what buffs do the spriest and boomkin give that give us a 4% hit increase ....
